Coming Up in February

Stitch Morning followed by a talk on  "Felting" by Annis McGowan

What began as a hobby for Annis has now become a small business. She has combined her passions of needle felting, design and wildlife by creating wonderful sculptures which can be seen in galleries around the Lake District and Thirsk.

"Once I discovered the art of needle felting it became my passion.  I love the way wool can be sculpted into my own creations."

Grassington Embroiderers' Guild welcomes all visitors to our talks.

Gelli Plate Workshop

Happy New Year from us all at the Grassington Embroiderers' Guild.

I just had to begin my new year blog by suggesting we all visit Hertford next year to see their 27 festive topped post boxes! Follow the link below to get more of a flavour of this spectacular display.

Our first meeting of the year was a Gelli Plating workshop. What a way to start 2019, painting and designing! Whilst some of us were new to this fabric printing technique, others shared their expertise and we spent a fun filled day creating prints with unique personality ready for embellishing with stitch.

A Gelli Plate is a revolutionary printing surface that makes it easy to produce beautiful individual artwork with amazing colours and textures. The Gelli Plate looks and feels like gelatin, but is durable, reusable and stores at room temperature. It's easy to clean and always ready for printing.

First spread a layer of paint onto the Gelli Plate. Press a wooden printing block, or a roller with a textured centre (the one below is a child's rolling pin with different size elastic bands), or a piece of lace onto the painted surface. Take off the design implement and press on the layer of fabric to be printed.

By using different stencils, stamps, masks and found objects, innovative pieces of art work are created on the fabric.

Cut out sections of the print work and layer together a combination of  the pieces, and it is ready to embellish on the top with free machine work or hand stitching.

I am looking forward to seeing a few finished pieces at our next meeting. At the moment my fabric is drying on the Aga and I can't wait to get started with the stitching process.
